Nastiness in Letterbox Logbooks

From: The Spooky Group (danelle_27@yahoo.com) | Date: 2004-04-19 01:46:08 UTC
Hi Fellow boxers,

Today, while out for a wonderful hike in a great park, we came upon a
very sad sight in a letterbox. The box was a little exposed when we
found it but everything was intact, sort of... The journal had been
vandalized in a pornographic way. Some very obnoxious hoodlum had
taken it upon themself to leave very nasty images and notes with
websites and other references. They had marred nearly seven or eight
pages throughout the logbook. Being more than a little shocked, we
didn't quite know what to do. Our first instinct was to remove the
pages because we wouldn't want our logbook to look like that.

What should we have done? Should we remove the offending pages
(possible in the logbook in question)? Should we inform the placer
and let them deal with it?

Looking for help.

Were the vandalized pages already stamped, or blank? I might have
removed them if they were just blank pages so no one else had to
stumble upon it, but if they were stamped I'd just contact the
placer and let them deal with it. Yuck!

I would have removed them too. It is obvious that the placer did
not intend the box to be pornographic and it was an act of
vandalism. I hate to think of families letterboxing and kids
finding those pages first. What a shame that someone would
violate someone's work like that.

Good question for the group. I'm curious to see what others will
say.

Informing the placer would be the best thing you could do. Mailing them the
log book and/or replacing it with a new one would be above and beyond but a
good too. I think it's great of you to be concerned. Thanks for caring!

It's truly a shame that that happened! We have to deal with a lot of nastiness, and the 'partyers' really hurt the hobby the most. Considering the large number of children that letterbox, I think your first instinct to remove the pages might be best. You could still keep them, and focus on the good folks who truly enjoyed going to the box you offered them, despite bad efforts to detract from their stamps and kind words. Don't let the jerks bring you down! There's more of us than there are of them, buddy!

My mistake! I thought you WERE the placer! Please, don't follow my advise, then, to remove the pages without checking with the placer first.

Chagrined,

How sad indeed, that the persons that vandalizad this letterbox could not have found something more constructive to do with their energy. I think if I had come across this letterbox, I would have moved it to a nearby spot, and notified the placer. Chances are the persons who did this will return to see what became of their "work". Yes, I would have removed the offending pages. No reason a child out for a day of good, clean fun with his family should be subjected to this type of trash. Just my humble opinion. :)

I would agree with the others. Remove and distroy the vandalized
pages. It would be good to inform the placer also. If this happens
repeatedly, the box may have to be moved to a more isolated location.
